Dorothy Norman took this photograph in Chatham, Massachusetts. It's a surreal image, like something out of a dream. I wonder what was going through Dorothy's head when she decided to take it. That giant hand! It looks like it's made of metal, and there’s a tiny figure blowing a horn right into it. It's such a bizarre combination of elements. It reminds me of some of the stuff Man Ray was doing. I can imagine her wandering around with her camera, searching for the perfect angle, the right light. She must have had an eye for the unusual, a willingness to embrace the absurd. The photograph is a bit grainy, but this only adds to its charm, its sense of being a captured moment. It really makes you think about how artists see the world, how they find beauty and interest in the strangest places. That is, how their vision inspires our vision, and how all our visions come together.
