This photogravure of a Siberian hunting lodge by Wilczek is a really interesting process. It's all about etching and ink, a dance between light and shadow, creating something that feels both delicate and solid. Look closely and you'll notice the texture, that grainy surface, almost like a drawing! It’s all about the materiality, the way the ink sits on the page, creating depth and atmosphere. Notice the way the artist renders the trees, with these wiry lines – the gesture of the hand is so apparent. It reminds me of Morandi’s etchings, the way he repeats the same simple forms, building up layers of tone, finding endless variations in the everyday. Art is always about a conversation, a back-and-forth between artists across time. It’s about taking something, transforming it, and making it your own. And that, for me, is the beauty of it all.
