Abraham Teerlink painted "The Cascades at Tivoli, with a Storm Approaching" using oil on canvas. Here, the cascading waters command attention, not merely as a natural phenomenon, but as a symbol of nature's power, a sublime force capable of both creation and destruction. The waterfall as a motif appears in artistic expressions across cultures, from ancient Chinese landscape paintings to Renaissance allegories. This persistent image taps into a primal awe. The storm approaching—darkening skies heavy with rain—adds another layer. Think of the deluge in biblical stories, or the tempestuous seas in Romantic paintings, where storms become metaphors for inner turmoil, the psyche battling with forces beyond control. Such recurring themes, charged with emotional energy, traverse time, their meanings evolving yet echoing through the ages, resonating with our deepest fears and yearnings. The presence of ruins in the background serves as a memento mori, reminding us of time's inevitable passage, a sentiment that is forever resurfacing.

The cascades (cascatelle in Italian) at Tivoli were already a tourist attraction in Teerlink’s time. The artist incorporated this contemporary activity in a view of the famous waterfalls. Beneath a menacing, stormy sky, a company of travellers ascends the hill opposite the falls. The man on the white horse is a painter, whose portfolio of sketches is carried by the guide at the front of the group.
