Editor: This delightful etching, "Acht geitenkoppen," or "Eight Goat Heads," is from between 1749 and 1761, author unknown, and resides here at the Rijksmuseum. It reminds me of a page ripped from a naturalist’s sketchbook – rather charming, really. What do you make of this array of goatish visages? Curator: Oh, I love this! It feels like peering into the artist's mind, doesn't it? Look at the variety of linework, the shading, almost like they’re trying to capture the very essence of goat-ness. I wonder if these were studies for a larger work or just a whimsical exploration of form and texture. Does it feel to you like each goat has its own personality? Editor: I think so! The one in the upper left seems quite grumpy. So, how would this fit into the art of its time? I'm just trying to picture the context. Curator: Well, the 18th century saw a rise in scientific illustration and a general fascination with the natural world. This piece could be seen as both art and science, a careful observation rendered with artistic flair. Think about the detailed studies of plants and animals that were popular then. What sets this apart, perhaps, is its playful energy. Almost as if the artist felt a particular affection for their subjects! Editor: That makes sense! I was too quick to put it into the “sketchbook” category. Curator: It’s easy to do. I like the intimacy, like stumbling upon someone’s private moments. I almost wonder if this could be the original meme? Different versions of goat faces that are comical, grumpy, confused. I would love to explore what types of goat breeds each represents! Editor: (laughing) Goat memes from the 1750s! Who knew? That really does change my perspective! I’ll have to remember that. Thanks! Curator: My pleasure! It just proves art continues to touch us today. There is so much personality that shines through from something so simple as eight studies of goat heads!
