Pegasus 

Georgi Mashev rendered Pegasus, a mythological winged divine stallion, in pencil around the turn of the 20th century. Mashev, who lived through both World Wars, was deeply affected by the political and social upheavals of his time. Here, Pegasus transcends traditional depictions; it's not merely a heroic steed, but a symbol of flight and escape. The dark rendering and foreboding clouds suggest a yearning for deliverance from worldly troubles. The winged figure behind the rider drapes them in cloth, in a moment of grief or care. Is this an angel protecting someone, or perhaps even death? The artist uses line and shadow to blend dream and nightmare. Pegasus becomes an emotional vessel, embodying our desires for freedom and peace.
