This Untitled work by Leo Leuppi looks to be made with gouache on paper, and what strikes me is the way the composition is structured around overlapping shapes. They feel like a visual game of association. The use of gouache here gives a matte, almost chalky texture, with layers that build up, creating areas of opacity and transparency. Look at the top right of the image, at the way the blue bleeds and blends into the ochre background. The texture isn’t hidden; instead, it’s very much part of the work's character. The forms feel spontaneous, like happy accidents. The overlaid rings create a visual rhythm, almost like musical notes dancing on a page. The composition reminds me of Hilma af Klint's abstract explorations, or even some of Kandinsky's more playful compositions. But unlike those artists, who are striving for spiritual or theoretical resonance, Leuppi's work feels more like a personal meditation. It leaves room for interpretation and celebrates the act of seeing.
