Editor: This engraving, "An Englishwoman of Quality in a Broad-Brimmed Hat," attributed to Wenceslaus Hollar, sometime between 1640 and 1707, has such an interesting quietness to it. The detail is incredible. What captures your attention most when you look at it? Curator: The hat! It practically shouts "status." It's the kind of thing that says, "I’m here, I'm fashionable, and please avert your gaze if you aren't of equal standing". I think that the very crisp lines, achieved through engraving, contribute to the sitter's rather upright and proper stance. The detailing on the lace collar, set against the otherwise restrained line of the body. Don't you think this tension is brilliant? Editor: I see what you mean, a certain theatricality contrasted with everyday wear. The print medium makes it all very… reproducible. Curator: Exactly! Hollar was shrewd, knowing prints were the Instagram of the day – disseminating images, fashion, even political commentary widely. This "Englishwoman of Quality" probably wouldn't have approved of her portrait ending up plastered all over town, but there it is. One might feel a tad conflicted here! Editor: So, a celebration and subversion all at once? A proto-meme? Curator: I like that interpretation. Maybe it also subtly questions the very notion of “quality” and who gets to define it. What do you take away from considering the artwork’s distribution and audience? Editor: That images have always had power and potential for, let's say, democratization.
