Rik Wouters created this print, “Gezicht op huizen met bomen ervoor”, using etching, a printmaking technique that dates back centuries. The lines you see are not drawn directly onto the surface, but are instead bitten into a metal plate by acid. The plate would have been prepared with a waxy ground, then the image scratched into the surface, exposing the metal underneath. This is a laborious process. The image is not quickly captured, but slowly coaxed into being through repeated immersions in the acid bath. Notice the fineness of the lines, and how the composition as a whole feels almost tentative, as though about to dissolve back into nothingness. Yet there is also a palpable feeling of light and air, particularly in the way that the trees in the foreground are handled. Wouters has used the etching process to create an image that is both delicate and robust, a reminder of the skill and patience that goes into traditional printmaking. Appreciating how things are made invites a closer consideration, ultimately enriching our understanding of the artwork itself.
