This silver 'Vroedschapspenning' of the city of Delft was created by Gijsbert van Moelingen, capturing the essence of civic pride. On one side, we see a detailed cityscape, dominated by the towering presence of the church, symbolizing not just faith but also the city's aspirations reaching towards the heavens. Below, a sailing boat glides along the water, emblematic of Delft's maritime trade and prosperity, connecting the city to broader economic networks. Turn the coin over, and you’ll see the city hall. The inscription around it, "Invigilans. Pluribus. Una Domus", or "Vigilant for many, one house", speaks to the collective responsibility and unity required to govern. The image of the house has appeared throughout history, often used in civic seals and emblems, as a symbol of the city as a unified entity, promising protection and stability. Though it has been seen in different forms, its underlying message continues to resonate: a community bound by shared values. This is a powerful reminder of our innate need for belonging.
