Theophrastos Triantafyllidis made "Youths Enjoying Themselves in Galatsi" with oils. I can imagine him outside, maybe in a taverna, squinting a little in the Greek sun. The painting feels solid, like the everyday. The brown and tan color scheme is a good choice for conveying its humble setting, while the blue sky and red shirt add an element of visual pleasure. Look at how he has rendered the women’s bodies; each figure’s bent neck is a masterful stroke communicating the pose. Did you notice the tree at the corner of the composition, cutting across the image at an angle? I have to think he’s looking at Cezanne, who also used these kinds of painterly devices. We all borrow and learn from one another, artists especially! We keep the conversation going, even across time. It's an ongoing exchange of ideas, that inspires me, and hopefully you, too.
