This photograph, *Palermo_ In the Park of the Villa Tasca*, was taken by Wilhelm von Gloeden, and wow, does it have a mood. The sepia tones set a stage where time almost seems to stand still. The texture! You can almost feel the rough, stony surfaces of the bridge and the craggy edges of the rocks. Gloeden really plays with light here, allowing it to subtly reflect off the water. It feels like one of those dreamy old master paintings. Look closely at the arch in the foreground. See how each stone is meticulously rendered, creating this strong sense of depth? It’s this kind of attention to detail that makes photography so compelling. It's a world away from, say, a Constable landscape, but equally powerful. Maybe this is what Ruisdael would be doing if he was alive today? In any case, this image seems to ask us to slow down, observe, and find beauty in the often-overlooked corners of the world.

In 1876 his lung disease caused Wilhelm von Gloeden to settle in Sicily where he took up photography. In his works he revives the ideal of Antiquity. Framed with cypresses and pine trees a temple is elevated above a lake and transports the viewer to a past, pastoral time. The blurred reflexions on the surface of the water turn the view into an atmospheric landscape. However, to the photographer the given aspects do not suffice: in order to emphasise the idyllic effect, he adds two swans from another photograph.
