This is a pencil sketch of mice by Johanna van de Kamer. It’s so delicate, almost like she’s tiptoeing around the page with her pencil. You can really feel the process – the artist trying to capture the quick, twitchy movements of these little creatures. Looking closer, you can see how the pencil lines vary in thickness, giving the mice weight and volume without being too heavy-handed. The texture of the paper peeks through, adding a sense of lightness to the whole thing. I love how she’s focused on capturing their essence – the way they huddle and nibble, the curve of their backs. The mouse at the top is particularly great, all hunched over with tiny little whiskers. It reminds me a little of the drawings of Albrecht Durer, who was also amazing at capturing the details of the natural world. I love how art can be both precise and expressive, capturing the world in all its messy, beautiful detail.
