This is a small photograph by Cornelis Deltenre, "Portret van een onbekende jonge vrouw als dienstbode". The cool thing about old photos like this, especially portraits, is how the artist frames the subject, deciding how to use tone and pose to tell a story. Here, Deltenre’s subject is a young woman in a maid’s uniform, and the grey scale palette emphasises the period feel of the photograph. Look closely, and you see the texture in her checkered sleeves, and how this is contrasted by the stark plainness of the apron over the top. In her hand she holds what looks like a basket, perhaps containing something she is preparing to deliver to the table. I love how the detail in her clothing contrasts with the smooth, muted background, as if she is emerging out of a dream. It reminds me of the work of early surrealists like Man Ray, who were so interested in these kinds of tonal gradients. Ultimately this piece captures a specific time, whilst also resonating with a wider art historical dialogue. What do you think?
