This sword and scabbard, known as a rudus, was crafted by Muhammad Salih of Terumon, likely sometime in the 19th century. The sword’s iron blade is inlaid with brass, contrasting with the wooden hilt and scabbard, the latter densely carved. The blade's form speaks to a specific technology: the hardening, shaping and sharpening of iron. Yet, the decorative brass inlay, and intricate carving of the scabbard elevate it beyond mere utility. The labor involved in creating such a piece would have been substantial, requiring skilled artisans to work in concert. Consider the cultural context: such a sword would have been a symbol of power and status, embodying the resources and labor needed for its creation. So, this is more than just a weapon; it's a statement about value, class, and artistry, blurring the lines between functional object and artwork.
