This print by William Dole is a little puzzle made of marks and scraps, probably made with lithography. What gets me is how each element feels both precise and accidental. Look at the smudges of gray and black, scattered like ink blots, contrasting with these straight, architectural lines. Then, tiny fragments of text appear, hinting at stories, yet remaining just out of reach. I mean, is that a signature? or just another shape? Dole's like a paper-stained poet; his work reminds me of Kurt Schwitters' collages, where everyday scraps become art. He transforms the discarded into something precious. It’s an invitation to slow down, to savor the quiet beauty of the incomplete, and to recognize the poetry in the process. Art that lingers in the mind, suggesting more than it reveals.
