Kazimir Malevich made this square canvas, about a meter wide, into a black cross on a white ground. I'm guessing that the painting came into being through shifting and emerging through trial, error, and intuition. I sympathize with Malevich here, imagining him thinking about surface, and what it means to cover it or reveal it. The paint looks like it’s applied thinly, the texture of the canvas showing through. The feeling, the intention, or the meaning of a cross? It's hard to say. It’s like Malevich is in an ongoing conversation with painters across time, like he’s embracing ambiguity and uncertainty, allowing for multiple interpretations. What a wild thing.
