Editor: Here we have an undated drawing by Elizabeth Rigby, a delicate head study rendered in watercolor and pencil. The soft lines and muted tones create a very intimate feel. What can you tell me about this piece? Curator: Well, considering Rigby's social standing and later role as Lady Eastlake, and keeping in mind her writings on art, this could be viewed as more than just a simple portrait. It speaks to the Victorian fascination with idealised childhood innocence, doesn't it? How do you think the public might have received this image back then? Editor: I hadn't considered that! Seeing it in the Tate today, it's easy to forget its original context. Thanks! Curator: Indeed! It's always enlightening to consider how social and political forces shape the perception of art.
