Here we have an ink-wash scroll painting by Xiang Wenyan, titled “Rolschilderingen”. The dominant visual experience is one of serene distance, achieved through a monochrome palette and layered composition. The artist divides the scroll into two distinct landscape scenes, one above the other, each rendered with soft, diluted ink that creates a misty atmosphere. Notice how the mountains in the background fade into the distance, achieved through subtle gradations of tone. This technique, known as atmospheric perspective, contributes to the painting's sense of depth and invites contemplation. The structure encourages a vertical reading, from the upper scene down to the lower, akin to descending through different levels of understanding or perception. The strategic placement of the inscriptions, or poems, beside each scene further enriches our understanding, functioning as semiotic markers that guide our interpretation. The form, as it captures a moment of reflective harmony, suggests not just a visual landscape but an intellectual and emotional space.
