This 1850 wood-engraving by Dutch artist Antoine Franciscus Cornelis Hoffmann, titled "Hier ziet gij, lieve jeugd! den timmerman, den metselaar, den smid en den schoenmaker werkzaam. Wat heeft ieder wel tot zijn handwerk noodig? […]" depicts four vignettes representing different trades. Each scene shows a tradesman at work: a carpenter, a mason, a blacksmith, and a shoemaker. These images, originally intended for a children's magazine, offer insight into 19th-century craft traditions in the Netherlands. The simple, illustrative style of the engravings and the accompanying text make them suitable for a young audience. The work, now part of the Rijksmuseum collection, provides a glimpse into the visual culture of Dutch children's literature in the mid-19th century.
