This photograph of the Voormalige schutterij te IJsselstein, was taken sometime in the past by an anonymous photographer from Monumentenzorg. There’s something so intriguing about the way the photographer has captured this building, maybe a former militia headquarters. The sepia tones lend a timeless quality, but it's the texture that really grabs me. You can almost feel the rough brickwork and the aged quality of the tiles on the roof. Look at how the light catches the windowpanes, creating these small squares of brightness. The dark doorway is like a dark gash in the building's facade. It reminds me of some of the early work of Eugène Atget. There's a similar desire to document a changing world, a fascination with the everyday. It’s a good reminder that art isn't just about grand gestures or bold statements. Sometimes, it’s about quietly observing the world around us.
