This fashion plate, titled Très Parisien, was made in 1923, probably as a print. Look closely at the way the figure is rendered – the lines are delicate but precise, almost like a roadmap for making a dress. The charm of this piece is how it balances the detailed patterns on the dress with the soft, almost watercolour-like washes of colour on the skin and background. Notice how the grey patterned fabric of the dress is carefully designed, like hieroglyphs, giving the image a subtle depth. It reminds me a little of Erté, another artist who worked in fashion illustration, blending graphic precision with a love for the fluidity of fabric. Ultimately, art is a conversation, and this piece speaks of a time when fashion was truly an art form. Each line invites us to imagine, to reflect, and to find our own stories within its frame.
