Editor: This print, simply titled "Ruffs" by Francis Barlow, shows a trio of birds in a marshy landscape. The level of detail is incredible. There is one bird looking at something above them, the other is bowing towards water. I find their plumage so interesting. What do you make of this piece? Curator: It's a delightful study, isn't it? I see echoes of Aesop's fables. The ruff, with its elaborate plumage, becomes a character, a symbol of vanity perhaps? Barlow had such a keen eye. The lines capture the birds' delicate legs so beautifully! Editor: Do you think there is symbolism behind the different poses of the birds? Curator: Potentially! It may be alluding to different aspects of behaviour. A reminder of the world around us? We can all see what we want. Editor: I never considered it could be read as a fable. Thanks!
