Study for Seated Angel at Left, "Israel and the Law," Boston Public Library 1895 - 1916
Dimensions 61.2 x 46.4 cm (24 1/8 x 18 1/4 in.)
Editor: This is John Singer Sargent’s study for "Seated Angel at Left, 'Israel and the Law,'" a charcoal drawing at the Harvard Art Museums. I’m struck by its raw energy; the figure feels so immediate. What do you see in this study that speaks to Sargent’s larger project for the Boston Public Library? Curator: It's fascinating how this preparatory sketch reveals the complex relationship between artistic vision and public expectation. Sargent’s murals were intended for a specific audience, within a specific institutional context. How do you think the setting, the Boston Public Library, influenced his artistic choices? Editor: Well, it’s a public space, so maybe he aimed for something grand and didactic, but this sketch feels more intimate. Curator: Exactly. It makes you wonder about the tensions between artistic exploration and the public role of art, doesn’t it? I learned something new about the public role of art. Editor: Me too, it is important to consider the audiences' expectations.
