Curatorial notes

This etching of the Church of Saint André in Pontoise was created by Israel Silvestre in the 17th century. The church, with its dome and cross, dominates the composition and represents spiritual authority, a beacon within the cityscape. Observe how the dome echoes across time, from the Pantheon's oculus to the soaring cupolas of the Renaissance. It reappears in a multitude of forms, each reflecting its epoch's religious and cultural aspirations. But what of the cross? In its simplest form, it symbolizes sacrifice and redemption. Yet, its persistence throughout history also speaks to humanity's subconscious yearning for meaning amidst suffering. Note, that the emotional power lies in the symbolic weight carried across generations. It touches something deep within us, a collective memory resonating with both hope and sorrow. The dome and cross are not merely architectural features, but enduring symbols that have transcended centuries, carrying layered meanings and sparking profound psychological responses.
