Léon Spilliaert made this watercolour painting, "Landschap met hoeve" with loose, washy strokes. It looks like it was done alla prima, a technique that invites spontaneity. The light in this painting really gets me: a hazy, overcast day, captured with such a limited palette. Look at how Spilliaert suggests form with the bare minimum of contrast, using just the faintest blues and greens to define the buildings against the sky. It’s so subtle, it’s almost like the whole scene is exhaling. I love the lone tree on the left, its branches reaching out like delicate fingers. You can see a similar touch in the work of Agnes Martin, whose subtle colour palettes evoke a similar mood of calm introspection. Ultimately, what stays with you about this piece is its quiet, unassuming beauty, a testament to the power of simplicity.
