This bracelet was made by a Navajo artist, also known as Diné, out of silver. The Navajo are the largest Native American tribe in the United States. They are known for their distinctive art which often reflects their cultural values. The geometric design might be understood as a map or landscape. These kinds of abstracted shapes can be found in Navajo weaving and sandpainting. The bracelet is a form of wearable art, intended for personal adornment, but also a signifier of cultural identity. Many Navajo artists today are interested in reclaiming traditional techniques and materials, while also engaging with contemporary social and political issues. Looking at objects like this bracelet within their historical and cultural contexts, we are able to consider the ways that they are meaningful to both the artist and their community. Further research into Navajo culture, history, and artmaking practices would help us to understand this bracelet more fully.
