Curatorial notes

Jean Covitré created this etching, "Man zit in de keuken op een omgedraaide wastobbe en eet," with precise lines, defining the composition and the confined space in which the man is sitting on a upturned washtub, eating. Notice how the composition uses diagonal lines formed by the wall behind, creating a sense of depth, while also trapping the figure within the pictorial space. These lines draw our eye to the man, who is rendered with detailed hatching that models his form and clothing. Covitré destabilizes conventional representations of domesticity, and class. The semiotic language of the piece challenges established social categories, portraying the man with a certain dignity amidst squalor. The texture of the etching—rough and unrefined—reflects the roughness of the man’s environment. It confronts viewers with the materiality of everyday life. The formal qualities of the artwork function as a discourse on the socio-economic conditions of the time, inviting ongoing interpretation of its cultural and philosophical implications.
