This photograph, by an anonymous artist working probably in Germany, shows a mother and child. It was likely taken some time after 1932. I can imagine the artist/photographer placing the child on the cloth-covered plinth, coaxing them to look up and to the left. I wonder how long it took them to get the shot? Did they have to try again and again? I wonder if they were a parent trying to get a good shot of their kid! In the second shot, the mother holds her child. In the simple composition and tonal range, I can sense a deep and ineffable bond between the mother and her offspring. The photographer captures a fleeting moment of familial love, reminding me of a Renaissance Madonna. There’s an ongoing exchange of ideas across time, with artists inspiring one another’s creativity. Painting, like photography, is a form of embodied expression which embraces ambiguity and uncertainty, allowing for multiple interpretations.
