This is Jacek Malczewski's 'Ellenai', painted at an unknown date, probably in oil on canvas. Look at how the brown shades in Ellenai's aviator jacket almost glow, like the painting is lit from within. It's all about layering; thin glazes of color over and over, a real testament to the painting process. The texture is smooth, but when you get up close, you can see how Malczewski built up the forms with delicate, almost imperceptible strokes. There's this great tension between the highly-rendered figure and the looser, more atmospheric background, a field of purple flowers. Check out how those flowers are just suggestive, not fully defined, which makes the figure feel even more present, like she's stepped out of a dream. It makes me think of some of those slightly haunting portraits by Paula Modersohn-Becker. Ultimately, this piece shows how art is a conversation across time and place, and that ambiguity is okay, maybe even the point.
