This is the cloth of a gala costume by Gebroeders Domhoff, worn by a member of the Guard of Honour during Queen Juliana's inauguration. Looking at it, I imagine the Gebroeders—that’s “brothers” in Dutch—laboring over it. Maybe they had that exact off-white color in mind, or maybe they were experimenting and adjusting the dye as they went along. You can feel the physical presence of the makers, their hands shaping, cutting, and sewing the fabric. The folds remind me of the way fabric is often depicted in paintings. It is funny how a single cloth can evoke so much: celebration, tradition, royalty, labor. This isn’t just any piece of fabric; it carries all those emotions and meanings. Much like a painting, isn't it? The brothers may not have thought of themselves as artists, but they were part of a larger conversation, just as painters are in conversation with each other. It’s about pushing boundaries, finding new ways to express, and seeing where it takes you.
