This is a cloth, made by the Gebroeders Domhoff, as part of a gala costume for a member of the Guard of Honour during Queen Juliana's inauguration. It’s that sense of something unfolding, something being revealed through process that grabs me. Look at how the fabric is folded, how the light glances across it, making some parts stand out while others recede into shadow. There’s a vulnerability in the folds, a kind of raw exposure of the material. It’s not slick or polished; it's just there, in all its simple glory. The cloth is a blank canvas that captures the essence of the material itself. You could think about Robert Ryman, in the way he uses white paint to explore the physicality of the canvas. It’s all about the layers, the subtle nuances, and that’s what keeps us coming back, again and again.
