Maurice Poirson painted "Elegant in Bois de Bologne" sometime before his death in 1882, showing us a fashionable woman out for a stroll. The Bois de Bologne was created as a place where all classes could mix, but it quickly became a place for the wealthy. It became a stage where wealthy Parisians could see and be seen. Poirson's painting captures this atmosphere, depicting a woman in expensive clothing walking her dogs, while a carriage and a man on horseback pass by. The parks were carefully designed to create a sense of naturalness, but they were also carefully managed to ensure that the wealthy were able to enjoy themselves in peace. To better understand this painting, we can investigate the social history of Paris during this time. By looking at sources such as fashion magazines, social commentaries, and park regulations, we can gain a deeper understanding of the painting's meaning. Art is rarely created in a vacuum and by researching its context, we can better understand its significance.
