This is an old copper and wood sealing stamp with the initials of Willem Drees on it. Look how the materials come together, the warm polished wood handle sitting above the tarnished copper base. When I look at objects like this, I think of Eva Hesse's work, especially the way she plays with the meeting point between soft and hard materials. The handle has a gorgeous grain to it, little rivulets of pale yellow. It makes me think of the kind of drawing you do without looking, letting the pen just follow the feeling. The slight imperfections, like that little knot on the bulbous top, only add to its charm. And the copper base? It's seen some action, hasn't it? Each dark spot tells a story, a pressed moment. Like a painting where the artist reveals every layer of the process, this stamp wears its history with pride. Art isn't just about the final image; it's about the journey.
