The Way of the Flesh c. 1573
Dimensions plate: 20.9 x 25.5 cm (8 1/4 x 10 1/16 in.)
Editor: Here we have "The Way of the Flesh," a plate print from the Workshop of Philips Galle. It's quite a scene, wouldn't you say? There's a lot going on... a blend of classical imagery and...well, earthly desires. How do you interpret this work? Curator: It's a fascinating stew of classical allusions and moral commentary, isn’t it? To me, it's a stark reminder of the Renaissance wrestling match between spiritual ideals and earthly pleasures. The contrast of the figures in the background to those at the table is incredibly striking. What draws your eye most? Editor: Definitely the figures on the dais! There’s such a clear juxtaposition of the grotesque and the idealized that makes you think. Curator: Exactly! It asks us to consider our own internal struggles. This piece isn't just looking back; it's holding a mirror to the viewers, even today. Editor: I never thought of it that way. Thank you.
