Henri Rul created this etching of a landscape with cows sometime between the late 19th and early 20th centuries. The etching process involves drawing an image into a waxy ground, coating a metal plate. Acid is then applied, biting into the exposed lines, before the plate is inked and printed. The resulting image, like this one, is characterized by fine, precise lines and subtle tonal variations. Note the stark contrast between the delicate lines of the trees and the rougher texture of the dirt road. The artist’s work is evident in the amount of manual skill involved in creating the original image on the plate, and in the labor-intensive process of printing. While seemingly traditional, printmaking was also profoundly shaped by industrialization, with new technologies enabling mass production and distribution of images. This artwork, therefore, embodies both the handcraft of the artist and the social context of an evolving art world, challenging any easy separation between craft and fine art.
