This print, Schildpadverkoper, or Turtle Seller, was made by Torii Kiyonaga in the late 18th century. It's a woodblock print, a medium that may seem simple, but actually involves an incredible amount of labor and skill. The process starts with a drawing, which is then meticulously transferred onto a woodblock, usually cherry. The artist then carves away the areas that will not be inked, leaving a raised surface. Each color requires a separate block, and alignment is crucial. Paper is then carefully laid on the block, and pressure is applied to transfer the ink. Look closely, and you'll notice the flat planes of color, the crisp outlines, and the subtle variations in tone. This print reflects a sophisticated division of labor. Kiyonaga was a designer and publisher, but he relied on highly skilled block carvers and printers. In this image, labor and leisure come together in one beautiful artwork.
