Victor Vasarely made this screenprint, *Bora III*, and I can't help but see the process right away. You see how the simple act of placing lines of black and white next to each other creates an illusion? It's kind of nuts, isn't it? How the lines shift and warp your sense of space. I keep staring at the center and wondering, is it coming towards me, or receding? It almost feels like the surface is breathing. I think it’s all about the surface, in a way. The crispness, the precision. It puts me in mind of Bridget Riley, another artist who used the interplay of black and white to create perceptual experiences. Neither artist provides any easy answers, they seem to invite you to simply experience the pleasure of looking. And isn't that enough?
