Fujishima Takeji painted this “Sunlit Landscape of Cape Shio” with oils, and I am struck by how the brushstrokes, laid down with a kind of calm certainty, really capture a transient moment. The color palette is restrained, almost monochromatic, which lends the scene a sense of serene timelessness. Looking at the surface, you can see the texture of the paint. It’s not overly thick, but there’s a clear layering that gives the image depth. See how the sun, rendered as a soft, diffused light, seems to dissolve into the sky, and how this contrasts with the solid, earthy tones of the cliffs. The whole scene vibrates with a gentle energy. It’s especially visible in the little waves! You can tell he was trying to capture the light just so. I’m reminded of Corot and the way he painted landscapes. Both artists share a knack for finding the extraordinary in the ordinary. Takeji's work is an invitation to slow down and observe the subtle beauty that surrounds us.
