Albrecht Durer created this image of St. Christopher in 1521, using the technique of engraving. This involved cutting lines into a metal plate, inking the surface, and then using a press to transfer the image to paper. Consider the way that Durer has manipulated the material, the metal and ink, to create the image. Look closely, and you’ll see a myriad of fine, closely-spaced lines. The areas of shadow are built up from cross-hatching, achieved through highly skilled labor. This method results in the stark contrast and crisp detail that define the print. The print medium was key to disseminating images widely in the Renaissance, making art more accessible. Note, however, the amount of work involved. Durer was not only an artist but also a skilled artisan. This combination allowed him to create both beautiful artworks and a sustainable business. Ultimately, Durer challenges us to recognize the value of labor and the artistry inherent in craft.
