This handwoven runner, with unknown origins, sits humbly in the Minneapolis Institute of Art, a testament to process. The neutral palette, a simple duet of undyed wool and dark brown, speaks to the directness of the materials. Look at the vertical ribs of undyed wool which dominate the form, thick and nubbly. Each one has a slightly different character, a wonkiness which gives the whole piece its charm. The dark brown stripes in between are thinner, each knot pulled tight to create a delicate beaded effect. The weaver is working with a limited vocabulary, embracing the texture of the individual fibers to conjure depth and rhythm. It makes me think of Sheila Hicks, who also elevated weaving into a fine art, with her playful experimentation and vibrant use of colour. This runner, though simpler, shares that same spirit of exploration, demonstrating the endless possibilities held within a single thread.
