Giovanni Battista Tiepolo created this oval oil painting representing a virtue, possibly patriotism, sometime in the 18th century. Tiepolo, a master of the Rococo style, lived during a time of shifting political and social structures. The allegorical figure, draped in classical robes, stands on a rock, holding a wreath in one hand and what appears to be a heart in the other. The figure's gaze is averted, perhaps symbolizing the introspective nature of virtue. Tiepolo’s representation of virtue is not overtly gendered, yet it embodies a kind of power, of dignity and resolve. The painting prompts us to consider what virtues were valued, and by whom, in the society for which Tiepolo was painting, and to consider those values today. Can the notion of virtue be expanded to include the experiences of all? What does patriotism mean in an increasingly globalized world? The painting remains a powerful reflection on the ideals that shape our societies and ourselves.
