This cast iron still bank, in the shape of a tower, was made by John Harper & Company, Ltd., sometime between 1790 and 1980. Isn’t it incredible, the way something solid like cast iron can mimic architectural details and textures? You can almost imagine the foundry workers pouring molten metal into molds, coaxing it into this miniature tower. It's like a world built from repetition, each layer echoing the one below, yet slightly different. I wonder what it was like to create this object? Perhaps the artists were thinking about stability, security, and savings, since it’s a bank. Or were they just into architecture? Think about the dark and warm color of the iron. It gives the piece weight and a sense of history. It makes me want to touch it. Like, how do we build our own towers, brick by brick, experience by experience? This little bank is part of a larger conversation about what we value.
