Tsuguharu Foujita created this still life in Paris. Look at how the paint is applied—thin washes that create this hazy, dreamlike atmosphere. It's like Foujita is whispering secrets to us through the canvas. Notice the way he renders the checkered tablecloth. Each square is subtly different, imperfect, as if woven by hand, or painted. The glasses on the table are almost an afterthought, as if he only remembered to paint them when the work was near completion.
