Cornelis Vreedenburgh made this little sketch of a figure on a sailboat with pen on paper. It's all about process, isn't it? I mean, look at the way the lines kind of dance around, not quite defining but suggesting the form. The texture of the paper itself becomes part of the image. The ink is thin, almost like a whisper, and those lines! Some are bold, decisive, others fade into the background. Take that line slicing across the page suggesting the sail. It's so direct, so sure of itself, and then you have the more tentative strokes building the figure itself. Are we seeing a boat? A ghost? Maybe Vreedenburgh, like, knew Egon Schiele?! It makes you wonder about the act of seeing, the act of trying to capture a fleeting moment. Art's not about answers; it's about the questions we ask along the way.
