This commemorative medal, created in 1597 by an anonymous artist, celebrates the victory of Maurice of Nassau, Count of Nassau, in the Battle of Turnhout. The medal depicts a lion holding a spear on one side, and a Latin inscription commemorating the victory on the other side. The inscription translates to: "Under auspicious auspices Maurice led his army against the enemy, and on the tenth day of December, with three arches, conquered the whole enemy's fortified city." The medal, currently housed at the Rijksmuseum, is a small but significant piece of Dutch history. It represents the Dutch Republic's military achievements against Spain during the Eighty Years' War and commemorates an important victory in the fight for independence.
