Valentin le Campion made this print of two lovers locked in embrace sometime in the early to mid twentieth century. Imagine the artist using a sharp tool to carve away at the surface, bit by bit, to reveal this image of love and support. What might Campion have been thinking? Perhaps he was thinking about classical sculpture, like the kind you might find in a museum, or maybe it was more personal, thinking about the embrace between a husband and wife? I love the way the lines carve out the figures to show how they connect. See how the drapery folds? It’s a whole network of these flowing forms! There is a real conversation here between classical conventions and the modernist movement and artists are always having those conversations, building on each other’s ideas, responding, and pushing boundaries. For me, this print celebrates the ongoing dialogue through time, inspiring new interpretations and expressions of the human spirit.
