Jean Puiforcat made this Creamer out of silver and glass, but when? We don’t know exactly! The metalwork feels very hand-wrought, yet its appearance is coolly modern. It’s this kind of paradox that draws me in. The handle and spout made of curved glass softens the starkness of the piece, while the reflective silver surfaces catch the light in playful ways, like water. Look at the vertical indentations on the larger jug. This is an area that seems to play with the idea of surface and depth; like the jug is partly see-through. There’s a nod to geometric abstraction in the design, and it reminds me of some of the work of Mondrian, but what is fascinating is the translation of such a visual language into a functional object. It’s as if Puiforcat is asking us to rethink our relationship with the everyday, turning the mundane act of pouring cream into a moment of aesthetic contemplation. It's the conversation between art and life.
