Julio Resende made this painting called “As pombas” with what looks like oil on canvas. It’s filled with all these blues and greens, like looking through water, right? And then these figures start to emerge, kind of ghostly, with these scrawled lines over them. You know, I can imagine Resende, standing there, maybe listening to some fado music, letting the brush just dance across the canvas. There's this tall figure, maybe a memory, maybe a dream, and then this other figure looking up, like they're waiting for something. I'm also wondering if the artist was drawing inspiration from Picasso as there are some Cubist features going on! The paint isn't super thick, but you can still feel it, especially in those yellow and white slashes at the bottom—are those flowers? Or just pure energy? It’s like he's not trying to tell you a story, but more like trying to catch a feeling. Maybe a feeling of longing or a sense of being watched. Isn't that what painting is all about? Feeling your way through, and leaving a little bit of yourself behind.
