Jozef Israëls made this sketch, titled "Studieblad, onder andere met een zittende vrouw," sometime in the late 19th century, during a period of great change in the Netherlands. Israëls, deeply engaged with the lives of the working class, here offers us a glimpse into the domestic sphere. The sketches of women, in different poses, perhaps captures something of the quiet resilience of women. You can see one woman is seated with her back to us. Another figure, possibly a child, sits beneath a tree. Israëls was part of the Hague School, and he used his art to portray the realities of ordinary people, and his work often reflects a profound empathy for his subjects. His focus on the lives of women and children invites us to consider the social roles and emotional worlds of these figures, offering a subtle commentary on the society of his time. These intimate sketches encourage us to consider the untold stories of women's lives during this transformative era in Dutch history.
