Joakim Skovgaard made this drawing on paper, ‘To kalker af motiv fra recto,’ at some point in his life. It’s interesting to see the artist working through his ideas, trying out different arrangements of figures, almost like he’s choreographing a dance or maybe a wrestling match. You can almost feel Skovgaard’s hand moving across the page, searching for the right form and composition. I wonder what he was thinking about as he drew these figures? Was he imagining their stories, their relationships, their struggles? The lines are so delicate and tentative, yet they convey a sense of movement and energy. The different tones of the pencil create depth and shadow, giving the figures a sculptural quality, and you can see how he’s playing with light and dark. He's almost talking to himself as he works. Skovgaard is in conversation with so many artists who have worked this way before.
