Nicolaas Wicart made this watercolor of a Dutch village on a wide river sometime around the turn of the 19th century. The placid scene and muted tones evoke the quietude of rural life. But the artist invites us to consider the economic structures that undergird this tranquility. Wicart was working during a period of economic decline for the Netherlands. The Dutch Golden Age of the 17th century, powered by maritime trade, was long over. Here, the boats on the river and the figure poling his small craft remind us of the centrality of waterborne commerce to Dutch society, even as that commerce was diminishing. The church steeple in the distance reminds us of the established social order, even as that order was being challenged by new ideas about individual freedom and democratic governance. To understand this watercolor more fully, we can consult historical archives to reconstruct the economic and political conditions of the Netherlands at this time. We can also examine other artworks from this period to see how other artists were responding to these changes. By understanding the social and institutional context of this work, we can better appreciate its meaning and significance.
